The Power of Your Words (Even the Silent Ones)

Ain’t it true that we can be our own worst enemy in the way that we speak to ourselves?

The last few weeks, I’ve held multiple conversations with business owners, professionals, leaders, family and friends who simply believe and have repeated hurtful things – not to others – but to themselves!! 🥹

Yeah I know….🥹

Here’s the truth…

Our minds are always talking. Whether we realize it or not, we have an internal dialogue running throughout the day, shaping how we see ourselves, our abilities, and the world around us. This self-talk can be our greatest ally or our worst enemy.

Too often, we fall into the trap of negative self-talk—doubting our capabilities, criticizing our actions, or convincing ourselves that we’re not “good enough.” This kind of thinking can drain our confidence, limit our potential, and create stagnation in pursuing success + fulfillment.

🙌🏾The good news: WE can control our self-talk and turn it into growth, confidence, and success. 🙌🏾

Recognize When You're Shifting into Negative Self-Talk

  • Before we can change our self-talk, we need to become aware of it.

Negative self-talk can take many forms, such as:

  • The Critic: I’ll never be good at this.

  • The Doubter: What if I fail?

  • The Comparer: I’m not as successful as they are.

  • The Perfectionist: If it’s not perfect, it’s not worth doing.

My pastor spoke on the topic of how our thoughts are a reflection of what’s in our heart and what we keep close within. While our thoughts may feel automatic, they are learned patterns—meaning they can be unlearned and replaced with something better.

Rewiring Your Inner Dialogue

Here’s how you can shift from negative self-talk to a more positive, empowering mindset:

1. Catch It in the Moment: Start paying attention to the words you tell yourself. When a negative thought arises, pause and acknowledge it. Ask yourself: Would I say this to a close friend? If not, then it doesn’t belong in your self-talk.

2. Challenge and Reframe It: Once you recognize a negative thought, challenge it. Is it actually true? Is there evidence to the contrary? Instead of saying, I’ll never be good at this - reframe it to - I am learning and improving every day.

3. Turn What If I Fail? Into What If I Succeed? Fear-based self-talk often starts with ‘what if’ scenarios focused on failure. Flip the script. Instead of thinking, What if I mess up? try What if this turns out better than I imagined?

4. Use Affirmations That Align With Your Goals: Positive affirmations help retrain your brain. Replace self-doubt with statements like:

  • I am capable and confident.

  • I am worthy of success.

  • Every challenge helps me grow.

Speak them daily until they become second nature.

5. Surround Yourself with Positivity (This may be a tough one!): Your environment influences your mindset. Surround yourself with supportive people, uplifting books, and motivational content. Remember, the songs, shows, videos, movies and people you hang around will influence your self-talk. The more positivity you consume, the more it will shape your inner dialogue.

6. Practice Gratitude and Self-Compassion: When negative self-talk creeps in, shift your focus to what you’re grateful for. Gratitude rewires the brain to look for the good. Also, be kind to yourself—perfection isn’t the goal, progress is.

Truth is your self-talk isn't just words -- it's a force that shapes your actions, decisions and overall success.

When you replace -

  • doubt with belief,

  • criticism with encouragement,

  • and fear with confidence,

you'll unlock a version of yourself that is unstoppable.

You are capable.

You are worthy.

And you are more powerful than you think.

Start speaking to yourself the way you would speak to someone you love—and watch how your life transforms.
